description The relevance of the article is determined by the fact that the flag is the main symbol of modern states. The flag system of the world was formed in the conditions of European civilization during the change of socio-economic formations, when the feudal “Europe of estates”, where the symbolism was based on the coat of arms, became the bourgeois “Europe of nations”, in which the flag became the main symbol. The research methodology is a combination of methods of social geography and social philosophy. There are few vexillological works written from geographical positions. However, in December 2019, the creation of a new scientific discipline of vexillology was proposed. Social philosophy does not pay too much attention to the study of flags. Nevertheless, in recent years, philosophical works devoted to the interpretation of national flags have begun to appear. Information about the development of the flag system in Russia is summarized and analyzed. The national flag of present-day Russia is believed to repeat the colors of the national flag of much larger Russian Empire. But the real history of the Russian flag is more complex than it seems at first glance because there wasn’t “the state flag of the Russian Empire”. A white-blue-red flag appeared under Peter I. Since 1720, this flag has been used only as a trade flag. The basis of the symbolism of the feudal Russian Empire was the coat of arms, and all other symbols were based on it. We revealed that slow formation of the bourgeois nation led to the fact that until the late XIX – early XX centuries there had been no Russian state flag at all. However, in the last decades of the Russian Empire, the white-blue-red flag was used. In Soviet Russia, red and gold Soviet symbols similar in color combination to the symbols of the pre-Petrine Moscow state began to be used. In 1991, the tricolour flag, “white-azure-scarlet”, was raised again. In 1993, a white-blue-red flag became the national flag of Russia, while the coat of arms retains the red-gold color combination. We determine that modern Russian Federation is characterized by a combination of the “pre-revolutionary” white-blue-red flag and coat of arms built on a red-gold combination of colors of the Moscow Tsardom and Soviet era, and both combinations of colors are equally historical for Russia.
