description Given the special situation in Spain where the Government is developing advanced public policies on equality between women and men, this article assesses how this issue has been represented in the media. In order to ensure that the media commit themselves to the challenge of equality, a series of measures need to be developed, such as: anti-sexism training for those who work in newsrooms; the introduction of gender studies in university’s communication departments and the transformation of a passive audience into a critical and demanding public who enjoy the right to full access to the public broadcast media.
