Description
Summary:This article focuses on the French community in the Dominican town Las Terrenas and focuses on the modalities of such settlement. This French presence represents a wide range of socioeconomic profiles and residential statuses. Our study focuses on real estate and tourism professionals, who are very numerous among the French community. Our goal is to understand their influence on the central urban space and how they participate in the modification of the area, by using legislation to their own benefit. This French presence participates to a strong urbanisation dynamic and land and property speculation processes, in the context of a construction and real estate boom. We analyse the consequences of this French presence on the spatial structures of Las Terrenas and we also reflect on the discourses and representation used by these actors to legitimise their entrepreneurial journeys, by underlining the place of law in the naturalization of relations of domination.
