Concerns were raised about the alleged duplication of regions within the image used in Figure 4A. The authors did respond to our queries but were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the alleged duplication. In addition, further analysis of the original image used in Figure 4A indicates that regions within the image may have been altered. The Editor determined that the findings reported in the article were unreliable and requested for the article to be retracted. The authors were notified of this. We have been informed in our decision-making by our policy on publishing ethics and integrity and the COPE guidelines on retractions. The retracted article will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but it will be digitally watermarked on each page as “Retracted”.
