Summary: | This paper is a revision about different topics related to restoration ecology, ecological restoration ofdisturbed areas, and application of concepts to carry out the ecological restoration of disturbed ecosystems, especially in high mountain ecosystems.Colombian Andes comprises various ecosystems that are seriously exposed to human activities becausethis is the most populated area in the country. As a consequence, these mountains present a wide range ofdisturbed areas, such as fragmented forests, derelict lands, urban centres, cultivated areas and grazedareas, areas experiencing erosive processes, rivers and streams with reduced water flow rates, andcontaminated soils and water bodies, amongst others.Restoration of these areas would require designing and implementing techniques based on applicableconcepts from Ecology, in order to develop an effective restoration strategy to assist the recovery ofdegraded environments and ensures their sustainability.Initiatives on ecological restoration require considering complexity levels. That means a hierarchicalsupraorganismic approach involving spatial and temporal scales of the disturbed area. Stages to beconsidered are: a) defining the objective of the project, b) diagnosis of disturbed area, c) implementingthe most appropriate techniques and procedures, and d) defining variables to monitor. |
