description | In this article I present the life story of my great uncle who came from “Indochina” when he was 87 years old, and with whom I recently became acquainted. This unexpected encounter allowed me to research my family history from a fresh perspective starting with the day when our forefather from “la Beauce” decided to start a new life in Indochina at the end of the nineteenth century. In this research, I set out to understand how one experienced life in Indochina as a person of mixed descent and then in France after expatriation. The migration trajectory of my great uncle reveals the contradictions, the complexity, the novelty, and scars that marked the condition of being mixed or hybrid. It involved a culture of being in-between, and an experience that could be sometimes joyful, and sometimes unhappy. |
