Towards an Understanding of the Semiotic Nature of Artworks --- In the article, the author explores the problematic of the artwork as an object of fascination. Objects of fascinations are things and phenomena in the world that are able to evoke in us significant and intensive experiences. Regarding such moments of intensity, the following question arises, that is also the essential question of art: what fascinates us in the artwork as an object of fascination? In the field of fine arts, the author addresses this issue by observing the differences between everyday (verbal, visual) and poetic (literature, fine arts) language. This is analyzed through several semiotic relations, such as the relation between models and artefacts, allographic and autographic art, semantic and aesthetic information, as well as denotation and exemplification. By thinking through these relations, the author suggests the complexity and in-betweenness as those concepts that most appropriately conceptualize the nature of the artwork as an object of fascination from the semiotic point of view. Namely, the artwork as an object of fascination appears to be characterized as an intriguing semiotic entity being in the in-between of different polarities. |
