description The article approaches the concept of Union as a citizens’ concept of justice, reconstructing and interpreting the socio-political and historical profile of the national conscience through several fragments from documents regarding the Great Union (signed by Ion I. C. Brătianu, Iuliu Maniu, Nicolae Filipescu, Lucian Blaga, Ion Inculeț, Ion Buzdugan). These selections from the documents of the epoch emphasize the symbolical implications of the Union that both come from the people and are feeding the popular aspirations of reunion, freedom and modern development. National conscience cannot crystalize outside the individual and citizen national conscience, or outside the belief in the national value that sustains belief in the national development and the national future. Modernity itself induced the crucial role of the people in assuming national conscience as a conscience of national unity, representing at once an improvement of the status quo and fulfilment of the historical justice.
