Summary:  Background: The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing worldwide and has become a significant public health problem. Diabetes can lead to many secondary complications affecting multiple organs in the body. There is an association between diabetes mellitus and cognitive impairment, rapid decline in cognitive function, and dementia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of diabetes on cognitive functions of male and female patients and to assess whether cognitive functions of diabetic patients differentially vary between male and female patients. Methods: 94 [Male (n=52) and female (n=42)] patients suffering from diabetes for more than five years attending diabetes clinic were selected for study and subjected to blood sugar tests and various cognitive function tests like MMSC, CDT, TRIAL A&B, WMS 1&2 tests. Results: The results from the tests showed significant alteration in the cognitive function of both male and female patients although patients are on treatment for diabetes. Conclusion: The elucidation of the mechanism of T2DM-associated cognitive dysfunction and dementia may lead to the development of therapeutics for this specific condition as well as for dementia.
