description | Launched in November 2019 in the U.S., the Disney+ VOD platform has centralized Disney's licensed film franchises, particularly “Star Wars” and “Marvel”. Previously scattered across a variety of media and devices, the films and TV series (live action and animated) they feature are now accessible on a single interface. The creation of Disney+ has a major impact on the production strategies of the franchises: the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” (“MCU”) already included many series, but their artistic control was then shared with various broadcasters, while it now depends exclusively on Marvel Studios. The evolution is even clearer in the case of “Star Wars”: the universe created by George Lucas is clearly following the path opened by “Marvel”, by extending its content to numerous series planned, in the same way as the upcoming films, according to a calendar fixed several years in advance. This article proposes to study the narrative consequences of this additional step in the logic of media convergence. |
