| description | Publishing a republican almanac in Breton in 1872 seemed a priori a promising venture. First, the political context was conducive to the spread of republican ideas. Second, the almanac genre – intergenerational, interclassist, encyclopaedic in style – seemed a pertinent choice. Indeed, it experienced a revival when the French population became literate after 1870. Third, addressing a rural, predominantly Breton-speaking readership in Breton also seemed logical. In 1870, approximately 98% of the population of Lower Brittany was Breton-speaking. So what exactly was this innovative new enterprise that appeared in the landscape of Breton-language literature all about? And how do we interpret its failure? The correspondence exchanged between Gaidoz and Luzel, the project’s two architects, allows us to follow its progress step by step and gives us an insight into the authors who submitted intentionally anonymous contributions. |
