description The urgency of the discussed issue is caused by the need to investigate the components of successful political and economic development of China. For the Russian community it is especially important because of accelerated social and economic development that leads to searching its effective models. However, many researchers note that many negative consequences are connected with insufficient account of national and local cultural specifics in institutional adaptation policy. China represents another approach which, in author's opinion, if not more successful, but at least, rather effective within specific national economies. The main aim of the study is to reveal and to prove that practice of urban development reflects the national features of institutional transplantation in China. The methods used in the study: comparative analysis, observation, content analysis, retrospective analysis and expert survey. The results: The authors have provided an overview of the administrative mechanisms leading them to conclude that one can certainly speak about a path-dependent view of institutional transplantation in China. They claimed that the eclectics, creativity, gradualism and critical attitude with which institutional transplantation is applied in China turn out to be a decisive point in its administrative stability and economic success. They also singled out the adaptation features of the concept «eco-city» with urbanism policy and city development practice in China
