description This paper proposes a transatlantic reading of the representation of Kentucky in the literature of the post-revolutionary period through three texts published between 1784 and 1793: The Discovery, Present State and Settlement of Kentucke by John Filson, A Topographical Description of the Western Territory of North America and The Emigrants by Gilbert Imlay. These works contributed to the circulation of the trans-Appalachian landscape in Europe and the Eastern States in cartographic, descriptive and narrative forms. By putting emphasis on how these texts and maps were produced and circulated, this paper shows that late 18th century Kentucky appeared a paradoxical landscape, both localized and idealized, both surveyed and fantasized, an object of land speculation which could simultaneously harbour the political utopias of the time.
