| Summary: | Background. The interests of patriotic education, maintaining the historical me-mory of the Great Patriotic War, clarifying the details of the life of its individual partici-pants are currently in great demand in modern Russian society. This is understandable given both the complex foreign policy environment, accompanied by targeted attacks on the fact-based, balanced Russian understanding of the history of the World War II, and in the context of the great demand on the part of Russians to comprehend this history through the prism of their own family, which makes it possible to embed a story of a kind into histo-ry of Russia, to strengthen the sense of solidarity and national community. From the point of view of academic science, these processes are also in demand, since they allow us to seriously detail the history of the Great Patriotic War, revealing it through the history of its individual participants. The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the military path of a prominent scientist, one of the founders of Soviet African studies, Alexander Zakharovich Zusmanovich. Materials and methods. The implementation of the research tasks was achie-ved based on the analysis of materials from the personal file of A.Z. Zusmanovich during his work at the USSR Academy of Sciences, award documents, memoirs of contemporaries. Special-historical methods of archival search, the method of historical retrospection, the narrative method were used. Results. The military biography of A.Z. Zusmanovich, his con-tribution to the Great Patriotic War as an army political worker is shown. Conclusions. On the example of studying the military biography of A.Z. Zusmanovich, one can under-stand what was the real significance of the military specialty “political instructor” for victo-ry in the Great Patriotic War.
