Description
Summary:The hitherto unpublished intaglios here presented come from Istria and Dalmatia: they are highly important for the study of the glyptics of Republican Rome, because they testify to new iconographic details, as it has often been recognised inthe study of the gems of the Croatian area. On the intaglio from Istria, the motif of Rhea Silvia is represented with hitherto unknown variants; it is the same with the cornaline stone from Dalmatia which represents the siege of Thebai: one notices peculiarities and formal creations that have no parallels in the published items. One can also see how the detailed study of local production can throw light on the artistic and social characteristics of the area under examination, as Mme Guiraud’s masterly studies have recently shown.
