description | Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre (1847) is analyzed in the article from the point of view of its valence, i.e. its inner ability to stimulate new works of art and literature, as well as new meanings. One of these new works of fiction — Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) by Jean Rhys — was written as a post-colonial response to Ch. Brontë’s novel. Born in the West Indies, Jean Rhys always tried to cultivate her colonial ‘otherness’ in her books, the quality reaching its peak in Wide Sargasso Sea. The character Mr. R. (reincarnated Mister Rochester from Ch. Brontë’s novel) and especially of Bertha Rochester, the mad wife of Mr. Rochester, became the main points of dispute with Jane Eyre. Jean Rhys depicts Bertha’s life from her early childhood to her death. In Rhys’s novel the author makes a shift of stress in the main binary opposition between colony and metropolitan country. From her perspective, colony makes a positive member of the dichotomy, while metropolis is heavily criticized. What is more, Wide Sargasso Sea was the first novel of a new literary sub-genre of post-colonial response that became popular in the end of the 20th century. |
