Summary: | In Montes Claros, in the north of the state of Minas Gerais, a seismic reactivation which occurred in 2012
has raised the level of risk to natural hazard in some districts of the city, which is causing apprehension to its
residents. This fact is proven by the coexistence of areas with occurrences of earthquakes and vulnerable populations in the economic sense. In this city occurrences of several moderate-intensity shocks with a
magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale have been observed. Montes Claros, as well as most Brazilian cities,
due to the poor population, does not have adequate construction techniques to reduce the risk of natural
hazard. Although unlikely, the combination of a high magnitude earthquake and the economic vulnerability
of residents living near epicenters might have negative consequences for the well-being of society. Thus, this
paper aims to analyze two districts located in the northwest region of the city, Vila Atlântida and Ibituruna,
in order to show the differences that exist as to the economic vulnerability of the residents and the risk to the
danger generated from the occurrence of earthquakes. For this purpose, remote sensing techniques were used
to show shapes, sizes, densities and standard of residences, together with the overlapping of economic data
of IBGE's census tracts. As a result, it has been proven that the Vila Atlântida district has a greater natural
hazard risk than the one in Ibituruna, and the economic conditions were the main factors to determine the
level of risk between them, since both are close to the earthquake focal area. It is necessary that the public
authorities take intervention measures, especially in the districts with greater risk, because in case there are
other seismic shocks, the population of these locations may be the most affected. |
