| description | The 1984 entry into service of elevated rail transit in the capital of the Philippines was finalizing the “modernity” urban project of Ferdinand Marcos. This infrastructure affixed to the city fabric brings about many questions about its ability to create new territories within the urban context of Manila and surrounding towns plagued by urban insularity. Recent economic trends, especially the rise in fuel prices, have increased the attractiveness of rail transit in Manilla. The LRT/MRT network is now integrated into the urban lifestyle and some stations have become magnets for real estate projects. In turn, metrorail now has an effect on urban changes, in terms of transformation of the built environment, but also for mobility at large. This mode of transportation contributes to a stratification of mobility for young urban professionals who have abandoned the dream of home ownership in large residential areas on the outskirts of the capital. Field studies carried at a fine scale allow a detailed analysis of sectors and the ongoing territorialization in which the metro takes part. |
