Description
Summary:The size of a paper prevents from an extensive picture of both the today heuristic tools used in history of ancient religions and their appropriateness for studying religion in Roman communities. Therefore I made choices relevant to a specific religious horizon : the Roman religion that is the public religion of the Roman state. I start with a brief reminder of tools in human and social sciences, which are not specific to the religious field, yet which deeply modified its perspectives. Then I focus on four aspects which have significantly crystallized the renewing of paradigms in the study of Roman, religious facts, and which are still object of scholarly debates : ritualism and the focus put on spatiality, which invite to both clarify the notion of belief and evoke the today current discussions on civic religion and individuals.
