Summary: | The article provides an answer to a question generated by the apocalyptic earthquake vision of Rev 11:13. The question raised is whether the remnant (those not killed in the earthquake) in this text is a positive or a negative group. The answer is dependent on three things: the identity of the city, the reaction and attitude towards God displayed by the remnant after the earthquake, and the literary background, both from the Old and the New Testaments. The article argues for the fact that hoi loipoi is a negative group, and their apparent recognition of God’s sovereignty and power is formal, but has nothing to do with true repentance, as presented in the New Testament.
