Summary: | This article analyses the results of the school system of the Basque Autonomous Community in terms of Basque language competence. Based on the study carried out by the Basque Institute of Evaluation and Educational Research, which is part of the Ministry of Education, it tries to highlight the contribution and the limits of the school system of this territory to the learning of the Basque language by the pupils. The result is that, although this teaching has been responsible for 200,000 additional Basque speakers since the beginning of the 1980s, it has not fully achieved its mission of making all pupils bilingual by the end of compulsory education.
