description | In Belgium, as in other French-speaking countries, there has been a centuries-old purist tradition, focusing its anathemas on topolectal variation. The primacy of an exogenous norm (the French “from Paris”) was not challenged before the end of the 20th century. At present, the legitimacy of certain endogenous norms is acknowledged, particularly in the lexical field. We will outline the main stages of this evolution in the attitudes and representations of French-speaking Belgians and the opportunities which can be drawn from it for a better consideration of topolectal variation in the teaching of French. |
