Experimental evaluation of occupancy lighting control based on low-power image-based motion sensor

Occupancy lighting control, which is used to turn lights on/off based on the occupancy state measured by an occupancy sensor, is a popular and effective type of automatic lighting control. This paper clarifies the effectiveness of occupancy control based on a low-power image-based sensor, which meas...

description Occupancy lighting control, which is used to turn lights on/off based on the occupancy state measured by an occupancy sensor, is a popular and effective type of automatic lighting control. This paper clarifies the effectiveness of occupancy control based on a low-power image-based sensor, which measures only the occupancy state by applying an image processing technique to visible images, implemented on a low-cost single-board computer. We found that the rated power consumption of the low-power image-based sensor was 69.50% or less than that of commercial image-based sensors. In addition, the low-power image-based sensor increased the total comprehensive energy-saving rate of the occupancy control by 5.38% or more compared with a commercial PIR sensor and commercial image-based sensor. Further analysis of the effectiveness of the low-power image-based sensor is provided herein.
