The results of this preliminary analysis show that the intonation largely depends on the discourse function of a marker; on the one hand; and the speaker’s perception of its importance for the ongoing discourse. A vague division can be made between the prosodic patterns of those discourse markers which are strongly involved in the organisation and monitoring of the discourse; and those whose function is more pragmatic.
