description | Greimas’ semiotic square is a valuable tool for analyzing the structure of a category. Similarly, from the semiotic fields of interpretative semantics and tensive grammar, the post-Greimasian proposals of Rastier and Zilberberg offer an additional understanding of how categories can be analyzed. This article aims to demonstrate how the union of these complementary Greimasian frameworks could give rise to what might be called “categorial semiotics” or “the semiotics of categories.” The contribution of this text is thus threefold: (1) it gives visibility to contemporaneous post-Greimasian work in the field of semantics; (2) it proposes new graphics (the “tensive trapezoid” and the “meaning curve”) as well as a methodology for analyzing and understanding any category; (3) it offers other sciences (e.g., biology, sociology, marketing) a solid theory and efficient tools for the conceptualization and classification of the realities they study. |
