description | Three main types of cognitive operations are involved in the reading process - concatenation, recall and selection - whose importance varies according to the different types of texts. After having identified the desire to solve an enigma as a powerful thrust, the author establishes a parallel between the operations necessitated by the reading of a SF novel, in this case Tyranaël by Elisabeth Vonarburg, and those necessitated by the playing of Riven, a hyperfiction on CD-Rom. Notwithstanding the differences related to the nature and the functioning of signs, classified here according to Peirce’s trichotomy, it appears that Riven can be considered as a pseudo-text because its reading implies activities of concatenation, recall and selection. On another level, that reading requires skills of observation, deduction, abduction and problem-solving. Even if they attract very similar audiences, however, the hyperfiction and the novel do not call upon the same activities of representation, and characters do not have the same importance nor do they fulfill the same function. The reading of Riven is also characterized by a generalized hybridization of the visual signs with textual documents of all kinds, which help the reader decipher the enigmas while extending the experience of the game onto the Web. |
