description Ionic liquids have emerged as an environmentally friendly alternative to the standard solvents and are now finding applications in various fields of science and industry like catalysis, electrochemistry, organic synthesis, and as electrolytes in fuel cells or supercapacitors. Recently, interest in their use as electrolytes for batteries has increased as they are thermally stable and non-irritating in contrast to standard electrolytes used in batteries. Application of ionic liquids could improve the safety in the future use of battery-powered devices over a wide range of temperatures. This mini review aims to discuss the literature reports on the use of ionic liquids as electrolytes in hydride batteries and protonic systems.
