Description
Summary:Gerunds have been analyzed from different perspectives, specially from a semantic interpretation based on the semantic features of their constructions (Bello, 1847; Fernández Lagunilla, 1999; Gili Gaya, 1961; Moreno, 2015). Verhaert (2008) suggests a novel interpretation in which, from a cognitive approach, demonstrates that modal gerunds zoom in on the details of the main action. Based on this model, this work analyses how modal gerunds behave and what types of visualization values other interpretations offer (mental activators, ilocutive and time and space locators) in Cuban Spanish. The results show that modal gerunds do have a zooming in value, but the rest of the interpretations constitute mental, illocutive, time and spatial locators, that frame the main event from a zooming out perspective.
