| description | In this article we explore the social dimension of individual identity as made visible through processes of social differentiation. These processes allow for the creation, the reproduction and the transformation of boundaries between minority and majority groups. By the establishment of boundaries, differences are created between these groups and are used as symbolic resources by individuals negotiating their subjectivity. Paul Ricœur’s narrative identity is used as a conceptual framework to look at this permanent negotiation of boundaries and to give an understanding of this process from the perspective of individual’s agency. To demonstrate the potential of this conceptualization, we analyze memoirs presented at the Bouchard-Taylor commission, a public hearing on cultural minorities held in Quebec in 2007 and 2008. |
