Summary: | Introduction: Visfatin is an adipocytokine secreted from adipose tissue and can lead to the occurrence of diabetes. Omega-3 can decrease lipid profile and prevent insulin resistance. In the present study, the effect of Omega-3 on the serum visfatin concentration was compared with placebo. Material and Methods: A total of 71 women with type II diabetes were randomly assigned to a group that administered Omega-3 capsules or control group. First, the study subjects filled in a questionnaire including age, height, weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference. In addition, blood samples were taken to do the blood tests. In the second step, the intervention was done for 8 weeks and then data on the aforementioned variables were collected. In the blood samples visfatin and lipid profiles (LDL: low density lipoprotein, HDL: high density lipoprotein, TG: triglyceride and cholesterol), glucose, and HbA1c were measured. Results: There was no significant difference in serum visfatin level between groups before the intervention (p=0.14). However, after the intervention, the mean serum visfatin level in the Omega-3 group was significantly (P<0.001) higher. In addition, the mean differences before and after the serum visfatin level showed a significant difference in both groups (P<0.001). Conclusion: The use of omega-3 can increase visfatin level and also improve the effect of insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes. According to the similar effects of insulin and visfatin, the use of Omega-3 by diabetic patients is recommended. Also, further studies are recommended to be conducted on his subject to confirm the results of this study. |
