description | Anthropologists have been actively recruited to collaborate to the fighting against the epidemic caused in 2014 by the Ebola virus. Once confined to remote areas in Central Africa, it has for the first time spread to West Africa and threatened the Global World. The response seemed, at first glance, to break with the legacy of the past, marked by panic and fear in populations and violence exerted against the medical teams. This special issue of Anthropologie & Santé contains a history of Ebola outbreaks, a discussion on science and fiction in anthropology, and several contributions derived from fieldwork conducted in the hardest hit country, Guinea, and the surrounding region. Anthropology reveals the tensions between ethics and biomedicine, notwithstanding the progress made in both and demonstrates its capacity of relaxing them. Despite its specificities, the Ebola epidemic of 2014-2015 is likely to be inserted into a sequence of events, which should be framed by rational preparedness, with the help of anthropology. |
