Description
Summary:This Article examines the question of dating the building inscription of the last famous king of the Bosporus in the late antique period — Tiberius Julius Duptun. The inscription contains a lacuna which suggests that the term “indict” was in its place, which allows us to completely rethink the time of its writing — after all, dating by indicts began to be carried out from the 6th century. Similarly doubtful is the well-established in the epigraphy sending of the inscription to October and the interpretation of numerical characters. According to our hypothesis, this building inscription dates back to the beginning of the VI century, was made in September at the beginning of the indict, and its Christian and pro-imperial character reflects the policy of emperor Anastasius I for peaceful integration into the empire of the Bosporus state, with which cultural ties intensified. This is indirectly confirmed in the written sources of this period.
