| description | As we look closer into these so-called minor arts, the “arts of walking”, by which we mean both dance and the Art of garden design, we are defending the opinion according to which it is precisely in the details of ornamental effects that a morphogenetic dynamic common to all artistic disciplines, still remains to be found. Moreover, we propose the redefinition and widening of the concept of ornament, whilst stressing its ambivalence. We shall first of all place late XVIIth century dance and gardening arts in their historical context, and evoke the already attempted confrontations between these two artistic disciplines – some of them focussed on the garden as a place for presenting dance performance, while others analysed the visitor’s circuit within its space-generating dimension, finally formulating the hypothesis of a single production principle for ornamental forms, common to the different genres approached, based on an interpretation of the patterns of both the “embroidered parterres” and the choreographic notations of the period. |
