Description
Summary:This paper deals with a vital topic, namely freedom of expression, which is a basic human necessity and aim. Freedom of expression is considered a measure of civility and advancement. Freedom indicates high regard for man's dignity, while repression indicates low regard. Freedom releases human potentials, and hence achievement and creativity. The paper highlights the situations and events in the Sunnah which are related to freedom of expression. The Sunnah reveals an unlimited scope of expression; Prophet Mohammad listened to whatever anyone had to say, and the Sunnah literature shows occasional concerns about things suggested or approved by Prophet Mohammad. In fact, some objections were uncourteously and roughly expressed, yet he would respond with patience and gentleness, and with an open, forgiving heart. The paper stresses how vital the freedom of expression is for upgrading man to a high level of personality, self-esteem, responsibility and leadership qualities. It also highlights the value of the Sunnah's example of encouraging freedom of expression and the demand for not only listening to what has to be said, but also for acting accordingly. The value is reflected in the actions and thought of the great leaders who stood up to the Quraish tyrants. Those leaders were able to conquer empires, east and west.
