Summary: | The theme of this paper is related to a study conducted in the French railway maintenance sector. First, the company’s request is presented in terms of the ageing of competencies. Then, the links between work and training are considered from the perspective of the place of the experience of young and older operators in training situations. From an analysis of ethnographical observations conducted during five training periods, some controversies on practices were identified during exchanges between trainer and trainees. These reveal three situation interpretation incompatibilities (related to technical means, production logic and operator status) which remain without a concrete solution at the end of training. The construction of the external pertinence of training in relation to work situations is then discussed so that trainees no longer have to develop by themselves the links between continuing training and their daily work.
