description One can learn from the Sangam literature that the Sangakala people lived their lives with certain morals. They have divided these types of morals into two types, internal (Agam) and external (Puram). Tolkappiyar has divided the internal disciplines into two disciplines: Kalavu (Secret Love) and Karpu (Chaste Love). The Agam life-style is also categorized as Punarthal, Pirithal, Iruthal, Irangal, Oodal, Perunthinai and Kaikilai, according to the suitable natural environment. The Sangam literature reveals that the Sangam period was characterized by a variety of land distinctions that divided the land into ecological and climatic regions for each land and bestowed praise on the way of life and morals of the people. According to Tolkappiyar, internal life is two types Secret Love and Married Love. The secret love is the deep love of the Thalaivan (Leader) and Thalaivi (Beloved) pure love that others will not give. The ancients marked the coexistence of lovers with morality, just as we call the scriptures “hidden scriptures”, which means that the Kalavu life of the lover and the beloved is pure and when they marry, it is called Karpu Kadal. Karpu Kadal is about the marriage of the leader and the beloved who enjoyed the Kalavu Kadal now has made an immortal transformation into social life. The Sangakala people called the marriage customs Karanam. Tolkappiyar points out that the wedding ceremony of Karanam took place without the parents. The leader and the beloved agree to marry by elopement (Udanpooku). The custom of beating drums, Chonch blowing, and chanting were practised in the Sangam times. It is noteworthy that in the book of Internal Life Policies (Agathinai policies) from Professor Subbu Reddiar’s point of view. He has explained in detail about the internal life-style of the Sangam people and the Agam principles.
