Summary: | Abstract Many residency and fellowship programs struggle to teach their faculty and residents the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competencies prior to a Residency Review Committee site visit. This resource allows faculty, fellows, and residents not only to learn the competencies but also to see how the competencies are integrated into the day-to-day work of a physician. The resource consists of two pages. The first page is the student page, to be handed out to the target audience (faculty, fellows, and residents). The second page is the teacher page, to be used by a facilitator who is familiar with the ACGME competencies. The student tool goes through a scenario involving a resident. The facilitator has prompts on his or her tool that allows him or her to pause and discuss appropriate competencies when they are demonstrated by the resident in the scenario. There are also two prompts that are natural points in the resident's day when the resident has the opportunity to be evaluated by the faculty supervisor. This resource can be completed in a workshop, a conference (morning report or noon conference), or a retreat setting. Prior to implementation, the facilitator should be familiar with the ACGME competencies. Ideally, all residents, fellows, and faculty should go through the training prior to a site visit. This extremely simple tool can ensure that your department has a clear understanding of the ACGME competencies.
