description | This essay was derived from a study which analysed the relationship existing between the Mafia and entrepreneurs in the Piana di Gioia Tauro, in Calabria. All economie activities carried out in a certain territory being controlled, either directly or indirectly, by the mafiosi, a typology can be identified which distinguishes various types of entrepreneurs based on the nature of their relationship with the Mafia. By investigating the reasons which force economic agents to cooperate with the Mafia, it was possible to make a distinction between subordinate entrepreneurs and collusive entrepreneurs. The former have their activities controlled by the mafiosi through an extortion-protection mechanism governed by coercion. The latter, on the other hand, can obtain an active protection thanks to their establishing a relationship with the Mafia based on loyalty ties or on their sharing the same economic interests. Hence, while being a bond for some economic agents, the Mafia represents an opportunity for others. Whereas collusive entrepreneurs have a voice chance, though a restricted one, towards the mafiosi, subordinate entrepreneurs can only escape what is imposed on them by the Mafia by making a hard choice, the exit choice. The presence of the Mafia also discourages productive investments and seriously hinders entrepreneurial formation. The typology illustrated can be useful to shed some light on the “gray zones”, to draw a distinction between those who are against the Mafia and those who are with the Mafia, between those who suffer it and those who support it. |
