Description
Summary:It seems well established today that the revised and continued version of Flodoard’s Annals was written by two different scribes. The first one may have copied and revised Flodoard’s autograph manuscript in 966. He is problably the one who added information on the years 877 and 966, but a second hand is also possible. However, one cannot in all certainty state that Bishop Rorico of Laon is responsible for the all these revisions and additions. The second scribe who is the author of the continuation over the period 976-978, was in all likelihood his successor, Bishop Adalbero of Laon: recent findings support this hypothesis. As for Canon Dudo of Saint-Quentin, he was undoubtedly in the best position to be able to introduce this revised and continued version of Flodoard’s Annals in Normandy. Finally, various observations invite us to work on a critical re-edition of the Annals, since Philippe Lauer’s edition deserves to be updated on many points: decisive works have indeed been carried out on the study of this work over the past century.
