Il contributo prende in esame un campione di autobiografie linguistiche redatte da un gruppo di senior - discendenti d’italiani - che vivono nello Stato di San Paolo del Brasile. Lo studio qualitativo, condotto attraverso il metodo biografico-linguistico, mette in luce le percezioni che i parlanti conferiscono alle varietà del proprio repertorio attribuendo al portoghese-brasiliano e inglese ruoli di prestigio, in quanto percepite come lingue che hanno una certa spendibilità. In concomitanza della terza età i senior dichiarano di aver recuperato la lingua etnica in chiave strumentale. L’apprendimento dell’italiano è associato alla possibilità di rimanere “giovane” mentalmente e “allenato”. Lo studio rivela nuove funzionalità che la lingua etnica va acquistando all’interno dello spazio linguistico di discendenti senior. Considerando l’aumento esponenziale delle aspettative di vita a livello globale, si sottolinea l’importanza di stimolare specifiche politiche linguistiche educative tese a promuovere l’apprendimento dell’italiano secondo paradigmi educativi andragogici.
A study into the perception of the linguistic repertoire of senior Italian descendants: towards new ethnic language functionalities
The paper examines a sample of linguistic autobiographies written by a group of senior - descendants of Italians - living in the State of São Paulo in Brazil. The qualitative study, conducted through the biographical-linguistic method, highlights the perceptions that speakers give to the varieties of their repertoire by attributing to Portuguese-Brazilian and English a prestigious role, as perceived as languages that have a certain instrumental spendability. During their senior years, the seniors declared that they had recovered the ethnic language but in instrumental rather than affective-cultural key. Learning Italian is associated with the possibility of remaining "young" and mentally "trained". The study reveals new features that ethnic language is acquiring within the linguistic space of senior descendants. Considering the exponential increase in life expectancy at a global level, it is stressed the importance of stimulating specific educational language policies aimed at promoting the learning of Italian according to andragogic educational paradigms.
