description On March 5, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the Basic Principles of state policy in the Arctic zone until 2035. This is a strategic planning document in the sphere of national security of the Russian Federation that was developed to protect Russia’s interests in the Arctic. It defines goals, directions, tasks and mechanisms for implementing Russia's policy in the Arctic for the next 15 years. One of the five main external challenges to national security in the Arctic region is the growth of foreign military presence in the Arctic and an increase in the conflict potential in the region. The author analyzes the counteraction to this challenge through enhancing military security as one of the main directions of the Russian Federation state policy in the Arctic (the implementation of a set of measures aimed at preventing the use of military force against Russia, protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity; increasing the combat capabilities of military groups (forces) of the Russian Federation Armed Forces, other troops, military units and bodies in the Arctic zone and maintaining their combat potential at a level that guarantees the solution of tasks to repel aggression against the Russian Federation and its allies; improving the system of integrated control over the air, surface and underwater conditions in the Arctic zone; creating and modernizing military infrastructure facilities, ensuring the support system of General purpose troops (forces) of the Russian Federation Armed Forces, other troops, military formations and bodies.
