| Summary: | This article discusses the influence of Kant’s ethics on philosophy of S. Gessen and the attempt of the latter to overcome the formalism of Kant’s moral teaching. It is to be noted, that although Gessen made much use of the achievements inherent in Kant’s ethics, he nevertheless came to the conclusion that the founder of the critical school in philosophy did not have the last word when it came to questions of morality. The Russian neo-Kantian philosopher thought Kant’s concept of ethical duty to constitute only one level of morality.
