description | Treatment of brucellosis, a disease which continues to be an important health problem in our country still presents problems for clinicians. The eff›icacies of doxycycline and streptomycin and doxycycline and rifampicin combination are very near. However doxycycline and rifampicin treatment is associated with a higher relapse rate as well as a higher risk of hepatotoxicity. For the treatment of neurobrucellosis, osteoarticular brucellosis and Brucella abscesses, a three drug regimen consisting of doxycycline, streptomisin and rifampicin or cotrimoxazole should be used. In Brucella endocarditis, combined antimicrobial and surgical valve replacement is indicated. |
