Summary: | The aim of this paper is to decipher the clan and the living place of Thaamaan
Thonrikkon; the hero of the hymn Puranaanooru- 399. Puranaanooru is a treasure bearing
the social history of the early Tamils. It’s true; the compilers of the anthology, the first
publisher Dr.U.Ve.Saaminaathaiyar and the commentators after him had done a wonderful
job. But there are still lots of unfolded pages which should be studied to reveal the truths and
forgotten history. The compilation procedure of the specific anthology reveals the lovable
attitude of the Tamil people towards the triumvirs; the Cheras, the Cholas and the Pandyas of
Tamil Nadu. As a result they have failed to bring out the adorable heroes among the
thinaimaanthar. Besides, the area to which the hero belongs was not finalised by anybody. It
would be fair on our part if we are able to derive the landscape in which the hero practiced
his leadership and finalise the clan to which he belongs. The etymology of the full name of the
hero itself serves as the source to pinpoint his clan. The residential township of the poet who
sang his name and fame also serves as the primary source to identify the hero’s country.
Google maps help us to carry out this task in a successful manner. The vegetation of the
landscape serves as the secondary source. The researches of 20th century scholars serve as
the tertiary source. We are able to finalise Thaamaan Thonrikkon’s landscape at the foothills
of the Kodaikanal mountains near Beijam Lake and identify him as the leader of
mullaiththinai people.
