Description
Summary:The comprehensive women’s health assistance focuses its efforts on antenatal assistance to detriment of family planning. This study aimed to identify the actions of the postpartum women in order to maintain their reproductive health. 379 interview forms of the postpartum women admitted in two philanthropic maternity wards in the city of São Paulo were analyzed. The study was approved by the Committee for Ethics in Research. The results showed that 85% of the women started having intercourse during adolescence, 94% attended antenatal appointments, and from these, 65% started doing it in the first trimester. It was also noticed that 41% of the couples make up the decision concerning de conception together; however, 35% of the interviewees said that they had made the decision by their own, and 74% of the sample had not planned their last pregnancy. The oral contraceptive was the preferred method. The decision for a new pregnancy was pointed out by 13% of the women. This study showed that most of the postpartum women who were interviewed looked for early antenatal attendance and were attended; however, it is necessary to implement family planning programs to subsidize the couple on their conception choice and to promote reproductive health.
