Summary:Literature has recently been extolled in its task of grasping contingency. The notion of singularity has emerged as a theoretical key to describe these new missions of contemporary literature. While it is true that literary criticism must take account of these developments specific to contemporary individualism, it is difficult to construct a literary theory that would be content to take up the notion on its own. Indeed, the notion leads, in the field of literary theory, to aporias that therefore deserve to be criticized logically and dissolved methodologically.
