description This paper is devoted to the history of the socialist movement in Bulgaria and, in particular, to the evolution of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, later called Communist Party. The reasons for the rise of the revolutionary movement that led to the anti-fascist uprising in 1923 and its inevitable end were discussed. The paper critically analyzes the policy of the party when it became a ruling one and its power became authoritarian, falling into the hands of its leader. The reasons for the failure of the Stalinist type of "communism" imposed in Bulgaria by external circumstances as a result of the Second World War were considered. The discrepancy between the theory of Marxism and the Party’s prac-tice is highlighted and theoretical and practical conclusions are made.
