description The almost unknown "Additional notes on the description of the lands of Brazil", by German Jesuit Anselm Eckart (1721-1809), deserves great interest for Amazonian studies. Eckart, who joined for five years (1753-1757) the Maranhão and Grão-Pará missions, published his own observations appended to another author's book on Amazonian natural and social world. The "Additional notes" chapters concerning Indian tribes' customs and situation under colonial rule are here translated by Thekla Hartmann and are commented by the author.
