description | Brazilian Modernism is an artistic and cultural movement that arises and consolidates itself in the context of the centenary of Brazilian Independence. It is a moment of redefinitions and re-positioning in the cultural field, which might be read as political gestures within the explicit search for identity that these artists and intellectuals undertake. Faced with the strong impact of immigration as well as deep economical, political, social and cultural modernization experienced in those years, it was necessary to redefine certain values. Nationalist concerns thus gained importance. In this struggle for definitions of the Other and the Self, Modernists, rejecting cultural dependence and searching for their own voice, propose an interesting alternative: anthropophagy, that is, devouring and critically assimilating the Other, the European culture, the transplanted values produced by the colony, but also those that had been historically repressed and put aside. This interesting proposal finds its major expression in Mario de Andrade’s Macunaima; rather than being an affirmative and propositional work, it is riddled with ambiguity and a basic structural ambivalence, revealing the intellectual journey towards the building of a national identity.
