Description
Summary:This research paper aims to provide the first overview of the potential for developing artificial reefs (AR) in Haiti. The overall objective is to improve food security through projects promoting the increase and management of coastal resources. After a brief historical approach to the use of AR since the 1980s, we will present a perspective on the development of sites adapted to current needs and management potential. Based on a field survey, we were able to identify the key issues for a pilot program. Food dependency on fish production remains extremely high, particularly in the South and South-East departments, where sandy coastal bottoms are ideal for the deployment of AR, and where demand from fishermen to manage new fishing sites is high. The study provides a clearer picture of how these installations are perceived by Haitian fishermen, in particular by identifying the fears and images attached to the installation of AR on the seabed, which could limit their development. The results identify two candidate sites with strong socio-ecological potential, and propose to distinguish several types of AR specifically adapted to the fishing objectives and technical possibilities in Haiti, as well as a realistic management approach.
